Protaras

Another once quiet village, situated on the northern side of Ayia Napa, Protaras has grown into an almost conurbation, joining Dherinia on the north, Paralimni is to the west and almost adjoining Ayia Napa and to the Southern outskirts of Protaras. Once upon a time it was no more than a small collection of hotels on the beach with a few houses servicing the people who worked in them, but over the last 20 years it has grown in its own right into a rather smart, more upmarket version of what Ayia Napa may have aspired to. It is spread out, so as to give an impression of space, and yet it has everything you might want whilst on holiday, including plenty of places to eat out and make merry, as well as entertainment for the kids in the guise of lunar parks, quiet sandy beaches, with interesting coves and places to explore.

The beaches are interesting and because there are many small ones in little coves, running all the way from Ayia Napa, most are not that crowded except maybe in the middle of summer.

There is little else to say about the place, as it has become a fully fledged tourist resort in it's own right. Very popular for weddings, the municipality has a nice set up and are quite accommodating. The registry office itself is not that inviting, so they are happy enough to perform weddings in various locations in Protaras, and there are some nice hotels, where a wedding in the grounds can be a truly romantic affair.

It is a child friendly destination, there is not only quite a lot to keep the little ones entertained within quite small distances, but it is a safe place to take them to the beach and let them run around , without worrying, as you would in most of Europe these days.
